American Kenpo Karate is a style originally developed by Ed Parker for American students but its roots go back a long way.  Ed Parker first learned Hawaiian Kempo from William Chow (Kara-Ho Kempo) who studied under James Mitose (Shorinji Kenpo and Kenpo Jiu-Jitsu).  So then, American Kenpo goes back to Hawaiian Kempo and that goes back to Okinawan White Crane Kenpo, which is then linked back to Shaolin Chuan Fa Kung Fu “Chinese Boxing”.  Now, the style has grown to have many different variations but we teach the original Ed Parker American Kenpo Karate style known to many as the EPAK system.

Lon Messick has studied martial arts since 1972 and began teaching in 1991.  He has taught different styles over the years and has now made Ed Parkers American Kenpo Karate available in the greater Kansas City area.

As a member of the IKKA Elite Kenpo Council, he has a 6th degree black belt and holds the title "Professor of the Arts" among other rankings with various organizations.  His own curriculum and style of teaching, certified by the International Kenpo Karate Academies and the World Wide Martial Arts Association,  makes it easy for students of all ages to learn and grow in their knowledge of Kenpo.  Mr. Messick believes that training in the martial arts helps people to grow not only physically but also socially with a great deal of confidence and respect for self and others.
